v2.40.0 β€” Speed Distribution Histogram & Reliability Fixes

Distance and top speed tell you where you went β€” but not how you got there. v2.40.0 adds a new chart that shows exactly how your session broke down across every speed range, on the live dashboard, in saved routes, and when comparing multiple sessions.

What's New:
  • πŸ“Š Speed Distribution Histogram: A new chart plots the percentage of your trip time spent in each 5 km/h speed band, from 0 up to 150 km/h. See at a glance whether a session was mostly steady cruising or full of stop-and-go.
  • πŸ” Everywhere You Need It: The histogram updates live while you're recording, appears automatically when reviewing any saved route, and lines up side-by-side when comparing multiple sessions.
Also Fixed:
  • πŸ“‘ Cleaner session resets: Average speed no longer carried over stale values when starting a new session right after stopping without a reset, and GPS warm-up is stricter about locking a good signal first.
  • πŸ“ˆ Comparison stability: The comparison view no longer crashes when one of the compared sessions covered almost no distance.
  • πŸ“€ Sharing: Sharing a session no longer double-prompts (and no longer asks for an unexpected password) if the share sheet fails β€” it now falls back to a single, clean download.
  • ⛰️ Altitude axis labels: Elevation chart labels are now crisp and legible at every zoom level and screen size.

Update Now: Reload the app to get v2.40.0. Take a look at the speed histogram on your next session or on any route you've already saved.

v2.38.3 β€” Walk / Run Cadence Fix

Step cadence in Walk / Run mode was stuck showing "--" instead of a live SPM reading. We tracked it down to the accelerometer data pipeline being routed through an internal exception list that cadence detection wasn't part of, so it never received any motion data β€” on either Android or iOS.

What changed:
  • 🦢 Cadence data flow restored: Walk / Run mode now correctly feeds accelerometer data into the cadence detector.
  • πŸ“± iOS motion permission: The motion sensor permission prompt is now requested correctly when starting a Walk / Run session on iPhone, where it was previously skipped.

Update Now: Reload the app to get v2.38.3. If you're in Walk / Run mode, cadence should now update live as you move.

v2.38.1 β€” Walk / Run Reliability Improvements

This update focuses on making Walk / Run mode more reliable in practice β€” particularly cadence tracking and the first few seconds of a new session.

What changed:
  • 🦢 Cadence now works: Step cadence (SPM) was not registering correctly due to a mismatch between the expected signal range and the actual values coming from the sensor pipeline. This is now corrected β€” cadence should read accurately during walks and runs with the phone in a pocket or clipped to your body.
  • πŸ“‘ GPS warm-up gate: Recording no longer begins the moment you tap Start. The app now waits until GPS accuracy reaches ≀ 25 m before accepting any position data. During this brief warm-up you'll see GPS: Xm βŒ› in the status bar. Once the lock settles, it switches to GPS: Xm in green and recording begins cleanly β€” with no false distance or inflated top-speed from early signal noise.
  • πŸ“± Keep screen on: The screen wake lock is now automatically re-requested if the system releases it mid-session, reducing the chance of the display turning off during a recording. A KEEP SCREEN ON reminder is also shown below the cadence display β€” manually locking your phone will pause sensor input, which is a browser limitation we cannot work around.

Update Now: Reload the app to get v2.38.1. If you use Walk / Run mode, give cadence a try β€” and notice the short GPS settle period before your next session starts.

v2.38 β€” Metric / Imperial Toggle & Revamped Dashboard Layout

ExActLogger v2.38 brings a full UI/UX overhaul focused on clarity and international usability. Every number on the dashboard now speaks your language.

What's New:
  • 🌍 Metric / Imperial Toggle: Switch between KM/H Β· KM Β· M Β· MIN/KM and MPH Β· MI Β· FT Β· MIN/MI from Settings. Speed, distance, altitude, and pace all convert instantly β€” no restart needed.
  • ⛰️ Altitude Profile on Main Screen: The live altitude chart now sits front and centre, replacing the old speed chart layout. Elevation gain, loss, and current altitude are grouped alongside it.
  • πŸ—ΊοΈ Route Map on Main Screen: Your live GPS track is now visible directly on the main dashboard, not only in Review Mode.
  • πŸ“ Unified Stats Grid: Speed, altitude, and distance stats now share the same grid and font size for a cleaner, more readable layout across all screen sizes.
  • πŸ“± Settings Panel: The settings overlay now expands to 92% of the viewport width on large screens and becomes scrollable on small ones.

Update Now: Version v2.38.0 is live β€” reload the app to get the new layout and units toggle.

v2.37 β€” Simplified Modes: VEHICLE & WALK / RUN

We've streamlined ExActLogger's activity modes to focus on what matters most: clean, reliable GPS telemetry for every kind of outing β€” whether you're behind the wheel or on your feet.

Changes in this release:
  • πŸš— Single VEHICLE Mode: Motorcycle, car, and bike modes are merged into one unified VEHICLE mode. No more choosing between them β€” the app focuses on speed, distance, altitude, and route.
  • 🚢 WALK / RUN Mode: Walk and Run are now a single mode. Cadence and pace tracking activate automatically whenever you're on foot, regardless of speed.
  • 🎯 MODE Selector on Main Screen: The mode picker moved out of Settings and onto the main dashboard for quick access before you start.
  • πŸ—ΊοΈ Cleaner Map Tooltip: The map hover tooltip now shows speed and altitude only β€” in line with the active feature set.

This release is the foundation for a more focused, cross-activity telemetry experience. Future updates will continue building on these cleaner foundations.

v2.36 β€” Live Delta Timing & Post-Session Route Comparison

Two major new features landed in v2.36: real-time lap delta against a reference session while you're riding, and a post-session comparison panel to analyse multiple runs side by side.

Live Delta Timing (v2.36):
  • ⏱️ Real-Time Gap: A persistent delta bar at the top of the live dashboard shows your time ahead or behind a reference session β€” matched by GPS position along the route, updated continuously.
  • πŸ“ Set a Reference: Mark any past session as your reference from History. The delta activates automatically the next time you start on the same route.
  • πŸ”„ Off-Route Resilience: If you deviate more than 50 m from the reference line, the delta pauses and resumes cleanly when you return.
  • πŸŽ›οΈ Delta Smoothing: A new Settings slider controls how aggressively GPS noise is filtered in the delta calculation, letting you choose between raw responsiveness and a steadier reading.
Session Comparison Panel:
  • πŸ“Š Multi-Session Overlay: Select two or more sessions from History and open the comparison panel. All runs are aligned by distance for an apples-to-apples view.
  • 🏎️ Speed Chart: All sessions plotted on the same chart, each in a distinct colour. Hover for per-session speed values at any point along the route.
  • πŸ“ˆ Time Delta Chart: The fastest session is auto-selected as β˜… REF. Every other session's cumulative time gap is shown β€” red when behind, green when ahead.
  • πŸ–±οΈ Interactive Tooltip: Move across any chart to see all sessions' values at that exact distance, colour-coded and labelled.

Update Now: Reload the app to get v2.36. Try setting your best session as a Live Delta reference, then use the Comparison panel after your next ride to see exactly where the time was gained or lost.

A More Focused ExActLogger β€” What Changed & Why

As part of the v2.37 and v2.38 releases, we made the decision to temporarily disable a set of advanced IMU-based features: lean angle, pitch / slope dynamics, G-force matrix, and acoustic RPM estimation.

These features were genuinely ambitious β€” and technically fascinating β€” but they required ideal conditions to deliver reliable data: a rigid mount, a specific phone orientation, careful calibration, and low-vibration hardware. In practice, consumer-grade sensors vary enormously between devices, and the results were inconsistent enough that we felt they were adding noise rather than value for most users.

What we disabled and why:
  • πŸ“ Lean Angle & Pitch: Sensor fusion on a phone is highly sensitive to mounting angle, vibration, and device model. Results varied too much across hardware to be trustworthy as a default experience.
  • 🏎️ G-Force Matrix: Closely tied to the accelerometer pipeline β€” disabled alongside lean/pitch to simplify the sensor stack and reduce battery draw.
  • πŸŽ™οΈ Acoustic RPM: Microphone-based RPM estimation worked well in quiet conditions but became unreliable at speed with wind noise, and required additional permissions that added friction at first launch.

The core of ExActLogger β€” GPS-based speed, distance, altitude, route mapping, live delta timing, and session comparison β€” is rock solid across all devices and remains the focus going forward.

These features are not permanently gone. They live behind internal flags and may return in a future release, either refined, optional, or gated behind a "Pro" toggle for users with compatible setups. If you used and valued any of them, we'd love to hear from you.

Motorcycle Pro-Tier: 3D Lean Angle & Vibration Dampening

We've released a major mathematical upgrade to ExActLogger, specifically engineered for the high-vibration environment of motorcycle cockpits and varying mounting angles.

New Features:
  • πŸ“ 3D Axis Projection: Our new "Earth-Frame" algorithm understands your device's mounting angle. Whether your phone is tilted 45Β° or vertical, ExActLogger now mathematically projects lean and yaw onto the road plane for consistent accuracy.
  • πŸ›‘οΈ Mount Bounciness Settings: Tune the digital dampening of your telemetry. Choose "Rigid" for solid mounts, or "High" for setups prone to engine vibration or road-bump oscillation.
  • 🏎️ Centrifugal Compensation: Improved logic for motorcycles that uses GPS and Gyro sync to calculate true lean angles during sustained cornering, preventing the data "drift" common in standard mobile apps.

How to use "Mount Bounciness":
Select the setting that matches your physical setup. A lower setting (Rigid/Low) is more responsive but more sensitive to vibrations. A higher setting (Medium/High) provides a smoother, "irons-out" visualization for more shaky mounts.

πŸ›‘ SAFETY & LEGAL DISCLAIMER:
ExActLogger is a post-activity analysis tool for entertainment and reference only.

1. NEVER look at the screen while riding or operating a vehicle.
2. Consumer-grade mobile sensors are not safety instruments. All metrics are estimates.
3. Ensure your device is securely mounted and does not obstruct your view or controls.

Update Now: Version v2.31.0 is now live. Reload the app to activate these pro-tier motorcycle refinements.

Engine Refinement: Enhanced Slope Estimation Logic

We've implemented a technical refinement to ExActLogger's sensor fusion engine to provide smoother inclination (slope) estimates during varying movement.

Refined Logic:
  • πŸ“‰ Dynamic Force Mitigation: The app now utilizes GPS-derived acceleration to help mitigate the impact of longitudinal forces (like braking) on orientation data.
  • πŸ”οΈ Improved Slope Approximations: By better isolating gravity from vehicle inertia, we've refined how the app estimates terrain changes during your activity.
  • πŸ” Visual Smoothing: Enhanced filtering allows for clearer telemetry charts, reducing artifacts from vehicle movement and vibration.

Update Now: Simply reload the web application to version v2.30.3 to experience these logic refinements. Remember that ExActLogger metrics are estimates provided for reference and entertainment purposes.

Precision Update: Intelligent Orientation & Vehicle Modes

We've released a significant update to the ExActLogger sensor engine, expanding its capabilities to more activities while improving ease of use through automatic detection.

What's New:
  • πŸš— Vehicle Modes: Introducing "Car / Rigid" mode. This advanced logic compensates for centrifugal forces, providing accurate inclination data for non-leaning vehicles.
  • πŸ”„ Intelligent Orientation: The app now automatically maps its sensor axes based on your device's physical orientation (Portrait/Landscape), drastically reducing setup time.
  • πŸ“ˆ Peak-Aware Filtering: History charts now use a hybrid filtering strategy that preserves high-intensity peaks while maintaining a smooth, noise-free visualization.

Privacy by Design: Like all ExActLogger features, these advanced sensor fusion algorithms run 100% locally on your device. No movement or telemetry data is ever transmitted to a server for processing.

⚠️ REFERENCE ONLY: All metrics are estimates provided for entertainment and reference purposes and should not be used for safety-critical decisions.

Data Visualization Features: Map Coloring & Social Sharing

We've added two new features to help visualize session data. You can now color-code your routes and generate summary posters.

New Feature Highlights:
  • 🎨 Map Coloring: Shade your route by Lean Angle, Speed, or Altitude to see variations directly on the map.
  • πŸ“Έ Poster Generation: Create a summary poster of your session, including a topographic map and key stats.
  • πŸš€ Performance Refinements: Internal optimizations for dashboard responsiveness and GPS synchronization.

These updates focus on making the data easier to review and share after your activity.

Altitude Tracking & Privacy Updates

Altitude tracking has been refined to improve vertical accuracy while maintaining user privacy.

Updates:
  • Map Alignment: Sync your altitude with terrain data for improved elevation estimates.
  • Manual Reset: Option to reset altitude at your starting point.
  • Sensor Management: Improved logic for location sensor initialization.
  • Privacy: Continued focus on keeping location data local and anonymous.

These changes aim to improve the reliability of vertical metrics across different environments.

Lean Angle & Roll Data Visualization

ExActLogger provides tools to track and visualize lean angles and cornering performance through detailed telemetry charts.

The roll tracking feature allows for post-activity analysis of entry, apex, and exit stability.

Acoustic RPM Estimation

ExActLogger can estimate engine RPM by analyzing audio from your device's microphone during a session.

Acoustic tracking provides an additional data point for session analysis without requiring external hardware sensors.

Data Access & Export: .EAL and GPX

Your session data is stored locally in the .EAL format, designed for efficient storage and access.

With support for GPX exports, your data is compatible with external tools and analysis platforms.

⚠️ REFERENCE ONLY: ExActLogger is an entertainment tool. All telemetry is estimated using consumer-grade sensors. NEVER use while riding. Adhere to all local laws.
